Heating & Heated Towel Rails Buying Guide
A towel rail can warm towels without necessarily heating the whole bathroom. Choose the required room output first, then compare fuel type, size and towel space.

Work out the room heat requirement
Room dimensions alone are not enough to size heating accurately. External walls, windows, insulation and the intended room temperature affect heat loss. Ask a heating installer to assess the required output.
Compare radiator outputs at the same stated test conditions. If your system runs at lower water temperatures, ask for the corrected output; the headline watt or BTU figure may not be what your system delivers.
Choose the fuel type
A central-heating rail runs from the water circuit. An electric rail uses an electrical supply. A dual-fuel arrangement can offer both, but only with compatible components and the correct installation.
Decide whether you need warm towels when the central heating is off. Have an installer check the controls, element specification and any system requirements before combining parts.
Measure rail and towel space
Check overall width, height, projection and valve positions. Allow room to hang and remove towels without obstructing doors or other fittings.
Check the manufacturer’s pipe-centre drawing for replacements. The same advertised rail width does not guarantee the same connection spacing.
Plan electrical work and controls
For electric and dual-fuel options, ask a registered electrician to confirm the product’s suitability for its bathroom location and the electrical installation. Do not choose based on an IP number alone.
Check timer and thermostat features, cable exit position and whether controls are included. Follow the product instructions for installation and operation.
Complete the heating specification
Confirm rated output, operating conditions, connection size, valves, brackets and any required element. Check the finish-specific output if the manufacturer lists different figures.
Browse bathroom heating with your installer’s output requirement to hand. A separate radiator may be needed where a towel rail cannot meet the room’s heat loss.

For a specific product, use its current technical drawing and installation instructions as the final compatibility check.
Compare your options
| Feature | Central heating | Electric |
|---|---|---|
| Heat source | Connected to a compatible water heating circuit. | Uses a suitable electrical supply. |
| Summer use | Depends on the heating system’s operation. | Can operate independently of central heating. |
| Selection checks | Output at your system temperatures, valves and pipe centres. | Electrical suitability, element rating and controls. |
