Toilets Buying Guide

Choose a toilet by its installed footprint and plumbing compatibility before its appearance. Check the pan, cistern, flush control and seat as a complete system.

Choose the pan and cistern arrangement

A close-coupled toilet has a visible cistern connected to the pan. A back-to-wall pan sits on the floor with the cistern concealed. A wall-hung pan uses an appropriate supporting frame with a concealed cistern.

Concealed does not mean maintenance-free. Plan access to the cistern and confirm the flush plate is compatible with the specific cistern system.

Measure the whole installation

Measure projection into the room, pan width, seat height and the location of the soil connection. Include the depth of a concealed frame, service wall or furniture unit in your room plan.

A short-projection pan can help a tight room, but compare usable seat dimensions too. Discuss access and comfortable seating height with the intended users and installer.

Check outlet and flush compatibility

Confirm the pan outlet arrangement and connection route. Existing soil pipe positions can affect which models fit and whether alterations are needed.

Check that the cistern and its flush settings are suitable for the pan. A rimless bowl can make the inner edge easier to reach, but it does not by itself guarantee a better or more water-efficient flush.

Choose a seat you can replace

Check seat shape, hinge centres and fixing access. Top-fix hinges can be useful where access below is restricted, but must still suit the pan.

Confirm whether the seat is included and whether replacement seats and hinges are available for the model. Soft-close and quick-release are separate features.

Complete the order

Check the pan, seat, cistern, frame where needed, flush plate and connector list. Keep the manufacturer’s model numbers together for your installer.

Browse wall-hung toilets, back-to-wall toilets or close-coupled toilets.
