Vanity Units Buying Guide

Choose a vanity around the room you use every day: how far it projects, where the drawers open and where the pipes run. The overall width is only the first measurement.

Measure the usable space

Measure width, depth and height, then mark the unit footprint on the floor. Allow room for doors, drawers and someone standing at the basin. Check the total basin projection, which may exceed the cabinet depth.

In a cloakroom, a shallower unit can matter more than a narrower one. Check nearby toilets, towel rails and door swings before ordering.

Check the support and pipework

A wall-hung unit needs a wall and fixing method suitable for the loaded furniture and basin. Ask the installer about reinforcement before wall finishes are completed.

Floor-standing furniture may still need wall fixing. Check whether existing pipes fit the cabinet’s service space without interfering with drawers or requiring alterations outside the manufacturer’s instructions.

Choose the basin and worktop together

A fitted furniture basin must suit the exact unit. A countertop bowl needs a suitable worktop, a planned cut-out, a compatible tap and a practical finished rim height.

Confirm whether the price includes a basin or worktop. Check tap holes, overflow and waste requirements; a photograph is not a complete list of supplied components.

Compare storage and materials

Look at usable drawer space after allowing for traps and pipework. Deep drawers, shelves and internal dividers suit different items; check drawings rather than judging capacity from the cabinet front.

Bathroom furniture materials vary. Moisture-resistant does not mean waterproof: follow sealing, ventilation and care instructions, and wipe up standing water.

Before you order

Record the finished dimensions, wall construction, waste route, basin model and tap requirements. Confirm handles, brackets and installation accessories.

Compare vanity units alongside basins and basin taps so that the whole arrangement fits.
