Question 1

What's the difference between countertop and wall-hung basins?

Accepted Answer

Countertop basins sit on top of a vanity unit or shelf, creating a statement look — they're popular in modern and boutique-style bathrooms. Wall-hung basins are mounted directly to the wall with no furniture beneath, making the floor easier to clean and ideal for smaller spaces where every centimetre counts.

Question 2

What size basin do I need?

Accepted Answer

For a main bathroom, a basin width of 500-600mm is standard. Cloakroom basins are typically 350-450mm wide. En-suites suit anything from 400-550mm depending on the space. Always measure the available wall space and consider tap placement — some basins need additional space for wall-mounted taps.

Question 3

Do basins come with taps included?

Accepted Answer

Generally no — basins and taps are sold separately so you can choose the exact combination you want. Check the basin's tap hole configuration: 1 tap hole suits a mono mixer tap, 2 tap holes suit pillar taps, and 3 tap holes suit a 3-hole mixer. Some basins have no tap holes for wall-mounted taps.

Question 4

What material are basins made from?

Accepted Answer

Most bathroom basins are made from vitreous china (ceramic) — it's durable, easy to clean, and stain-resistant. Some premium basins use fine fireclay for a thicker, more substantial feel. Countertop basins may also come in stone resin or composite materials, which allow for more creative shapes.

Question 5

What is a semi-recessed basin?

Accepted Answer

A semi-recessed basin sits partially inside a vanity unit or shelf, with the front of the basin protruding over the edge. This is a great space-saving option for narrow bathrooms where a full-depth vanity won't fit, as the basin provides full washing space while the unit behind stays compact.

Question 6

Do I need a bottle trap or waste with my basin?

Accepted Answer

Yes — you'll need a waste (the plug mechanism) and a trap (the curved pipe underneath that prevents odours). Chrome bottle traps are popular as they look clean and modern. Many of our basins include a waste, but always check the product page. Browse our bottle traps collection for stylish options.
